So it’s been a long time coming but here it finally is! My reel tends to be similar to painting the Golden Gate Bridge. It seems like as soon as I’m thinking it’s done I work on a new project with new footage and it’s time to start over. The footage was shot all over the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, British Columbia, Morocco, Africa, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Bermuda, and Russia.

Some of the projects featured are for companies such as RedBull Media House, Intel, O’Neill Philips, Quiksilver, Roxy, Weiden Kennedy, TGR, Warren Miller, Standard Films, Fuel TV, Unofficial Networks, Burn Energy/Coca Cola among others. Thanks for watching!

We spent the night and following day anchored on the lee side of Santa Cruz Island. It was a much needed break for Jack and the crew as well. We did get a little bit of work done. At the time it seemed like quite a mission to get the dolly and timelapse gear to the island (this would turn out to be a walk in the park compared to the Santa Barbara island landing). Jake and I put put our suits on and gear into drybags/pelican cases and Tommy carefully negotiated the Panga into a safe chest deep spot off of the beach with a cobble bottom. The suits seemed a bit much for the landing but were sure nice when we were done at 10pm and due to the tide swing, having to swim multiple gear laden trips to the boat.

The sunrise with Jack paddling and Anacapa in the distance was one of the most memorable moments from the whole trip. It was good seeing Jack beginning to hit his stride and it also felt as if the crew was hitting theirs as well.

Day 2 Paddle day 1 was rough. Jack, who hadn’t slept more than a couple hours a night for the week leading up to go time was having a really rough time with one of the hardest legs of the whole trip. Though not feeling the physical symptoms that were plaguing Jack I was definitely feeling the mental tax of no sleep and the severe sinus cold I brought on the trip with me. Being a primarily mountain based camera operator I was faced with instantly learning how to shoot from a severely pitching small boat (a 22′ Panga skiff that would become my 12+ hour shooting location everyday) severely compounded by the fact that our main source of illumination was moonlight. A challenge for sure. Honestly, I was also a little concerned the whole trip was going to look the same but luckly the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands did not disappoint.

The sunrise leaving the mainland and coming out through the oil derricks was something I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

The boat crew (Pete, Scotty, and Tommy) along with Joe, Nick and I spent our first day and night motoring the Bear Flag from its home and our ultimate destination in Newport Harbor up to Santa Barbara. The voyage began with a bit of rough seas and the harsh fear of being sea sick for the next 12 days. I knew the trip was the real deal when I saw a huge shark fin about 50 ft off of the port side an hour into the trip. Though, you would think a night of nearly being thrown out of my rack (which was located in the extreme bow) several times and pitched into the bunk above mine would be miserable, but my serious concern of nearly two weeks of seasick misery was laid to rest. All in all it was a great night. Upon arrival in SB at 4am the drive by wire system in the boat failed in the process and we awoke to total chaos as the crew skillfully and narrowly avoided a serious collision with a sailboat who housed what seemed to be the only people in the entire harbor that actually lived on their boat, needless to say they had a bit of a rude awakening.

We spent most of the day loading the boat and getting to know the rest of the crew that met us in SB. In the evening we had a pretty cool paddle out to give Jack a proper sendoff (something that would have lacked the proper romance during his paddle real paddle out the next morning at 4am) We also had a really nice dinner at legendary filmmaker Bruce Brown’s Restaurant. It was really cool meeting him and seeing that he still has the fire of a youngster in his eye. We didn’t get too rowdy due to the 4am wakeup.
